The 1980s saw the legendary wines of Lafite return to their rightful place at the forefront of the Médoc's premier grand cru classés. Aristocratic, silky-structured wines with a never-ending finish. Never drunk young, the best vintages need a decade or so to develop fully. Typically 70% Cabernet-Sauvignon, 20% Merlot.
The great tower of Latour guards the exceptional quality of this majestic grand cru, world-renowned for its dark coloured, brilliantly structured muscular wine. Very consistent high quality with an amazing finish. Typically 80% Cabernet-Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, Other 5%.
Elevated to premier grand cru status in 1973, Mouton Rothschild has a sumptuous intense fruitiness, opulent and rich. The labels change with each vintage, showing designs from many famous artists. Typically 76% Cabernet-Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 11% Other.
The premier grand cru classé Château Margaux produces one of the greatest and most refined of the world's red wines. An elegant quality, yet strong. Silky, yet intense. Typically 75% Cabernet-Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 5% Other.
The founding father of the top Bordeaux châteaux, listed as one of the five premier grand cru classés of the Médoc although located on the outskirts of Bordeaux city. In its uniquely shaped bottle, it is lavishingly good in its best years and good value. Typically 45% Cabernet-Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 18% Cabernet-Franc.
Away from the grand cru classés of the Médoc, the region of Pomerol, and more particularly Pétrus, has produced some of the most sought after wines in the world. Pétrus has built its reputation as, arguably, the finest wine of all, in just three decades. Typicallly 95% Merlot, 5% Cabernet-Franc.
St-Émilion's top premier cru classé is a decadent wine, opulent with harmonious layers of ripe fruit and a velvety-finishing taste. Quality of cultivation and strictly limited production are the hallmarks of Château Cheval Blanc. Typically 57% Cabernet-Franc, 39% Merlot, 4% Others.
The grandest statement of all Sauternes, the wine of Château d'Yquem is made from grapes that are picked one by one, by 150 pickers who pass through the vineyard up to 6 times to select only the best for this luxurious wine. Typically 80% Semillon, 20% Sauvignon-Blanc.
